In Ukraine, "koliada" - a tradition of blessing people in their houses and greeting them with holidays on Christmas and New Year - is still very common. Its pre-Christian meaning is celebration of solstice. "Koliaders" are usually young people who dress specially, enter all the houses and bless the owners (all of them and each of them personally) with special songs, praising them and wishing them good luck. For this they receive gifts - food and money. |
